Vaccinations for Dogs

Canine Parvovirus

Widespread throughout NZ and highly contagious. Most severe in young dogs and often fatal. Causes vomiting and diarrhea leading to critical dehydration. Once in the environment, via the stools of infected dogs, this virus can remain active for years.

Canine Distemper

Not commonly seen in NZ anymore due to vaccination. However it is important to maintain this control to avoid outbreaks. A highly contagious disease that is often fatal. It has a wide range of symptoms from runny eyes and nose, coughing, vomiting and nervous signs.

Infectious Canine Hepatitis

A severe, highly contagious disease that affects the liver. Causes symptoms such as jaundice, fever, vomiting, and loss of appetite. A potentially fatal disease.

**All of the above diseases are covered under the same vaccination (Vanguard 5) we would recommend that all puppies at least receive this vaccination, and its boosters. **

Kennel Cough

This is an optional but highly recommended vaccination. At Kerikeri Vets we use an intra-nasal method of delivery – no injections! A complex disease caused by several different organisms. Very contagious, particularly among dogs in high risk environments such as boarding kennels. One of the symptoms can be a persistent dry cough which although is rarely fatal can be debilitating and last for several weeks.

Canine Leptospirosis

This is an optional vaccination and is recommended especially in certain circumstances. This disease can affect any dog of any age, and can be passed onto humans. Transmission is passed on through the urine of infected animals, particularly rats, and affects the liver and kidneys. Usually fatal.
